Day Seven/Eight: Olomouc & Olomouc Beerfest (5-28/29-14)

Let me take some time to catch you up on my adventures from this past week. On Wednesday and Thursday, Dr. Murphy led us on a walking tour of Olomouc. When we first arrived he pointed out the important buildings and showed us a few favorite restaurants, but we finally got the jest of Olomouc on this tour. We wandered through the beautiful churches and climbed one of the towers to get a panoramic view of the city.

Palacky University, the second oldest university in the Czech Republic, is in the city of Olomouc. There are roughly 20,000 students who attend this university and it is a major part of the city. Dr. Murphy pointed out a few of the major buildings and we were able to see just how sprawled out the campus was in the city.

Olomouc hosted the ‘Beerfest Olomouc” and on Thursday we all attended the opening day. Although not a fan of the drink even in the states, it was very interesting to see the social culture of this festival. It brings individuals from all over Europe to Olomouc for a weekend filled with music, incredible food and of course beer tasting. We met a British rugby team and hung out with a man in a kilt from Scotland. Heath and Molly, a two person band from Owensboro, Kentucky was one of the opening acts and it was nice to hear fellow southern accents from our home state half way across the globe!
