Sorry for the horrible delay in between blog posts, but this past week/weekend has been filled with many busy adventures. So, here is a recap of last week before I do a second post over this past weekend!
Monday:
Our schedule for Monday was quite simple and we all enjoyed a free day for most of the day. D'Arcy and Jenna decided to go out and venture into the city and I stayed back to work on homework and the Vienna blog post. However, that night our professors decided to take us to the theatre to experience a Czech play first hand. Our group got dressed to the nines and we went to the theatre to see Shakespeare's Hamlet. Let me assure you that it was quite the experience. I obviously had no idea what was going on…it was in Czech…but it was nice to experience the theatre culture in a different country.
Tuesday:
We visited the Archbishop's Palace on Tuesday. The building is one of the most important early-Barqoue buildings in Moravia. The palace was a beautiful building that is still the house of the Archbishop in Olomouc today. In fact, it has only been opened to the public for touring for a few years. The longer I am in the Czech Republic the more appreciation I have for its history and I truly enjoyed touring a place that held so much. For example, Pope John Paul II has lunched in the Grand Hall of the palace and in the room adjacent, Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria was crowned due to the Revolution of 1848 that was taking place in Austria.
On Tuesday night a group of students went to the Austria vs. Czech Republic International soccer game in the stadium attached to our hotel and a group of students went to the Olomouc Beer Festival's after party with Owensboro's duo, Heath and Molly. I was in the later group. The highlight of my night was singing "Wagon Wheel" with my new friends, Heath and Molly in front of a crowd of Czechs!
Wednesday:
We started Wednesday morning out with a one and a half hour lecture that covered the entire "cliff notes" version of the history of the Czech Republic at 9:00 a.m. (Shew!) Luckily, Dr. Murphy let us take a hour cat nap before we headed up to Svaty Kopacek, a small town, on a hill overlooking Olomouc. We caught a tram and then took a bus to the top of this beautiful hill.
Wednesday night was one of my favorite nights of the trip thus far! The group put on our matching "The Again" t-shirts and headed down to the Jazz Tibet Club for an evening of music, dancing and fun! The Again is a band that consists of the previous mayor of Olomouc and is a Lynyrd Skynyrd cover band. Put a group of 20 American students in a pub with a Lynyrd Skynyrd cover band and imagine the fun that we had. The Owensboro duo, Heath and Molly, closed the night out and by the end we were all singing the songs together!
Thursday:
We had a surprise free day on Thursday due to some bus issues (I'll be sure to address this in my next blog post, stay tuned) so we took advantage of the opportunity and treated ourselves to a girls day! After shopping, eating and good conversation we all went to bed fairly early that night to get ready to leave for a weekend in Budapest, Hungary!
